Doi Inthanon: twin pagodas, cloud forest & the Karen village
The trip, in short
Doi Inthanon tops out at 2,565 metres, and the summit itself is an anticlimax — a car park and a sign. What is worth the drive is everything around it.
The twin royal pagodas at 2,200 metres sit in terraced gardens that stay in flower most of the year. The Ang Ka boardwalk crosses a sphagnum bog in cloud forest that feels nothing like the rest of Thailand. And the Karen villages on the lower slopes grow the coffee that replaced opium here in the 1970s.
We finish at Wachirathan waterfall, which throws enough spray to soak you from the viewing platform.
