Chiang Mai old city temples on foot
The trip, in short
The old city is a one-mile square inside a moat, and almost everything worth seeing in it can be walked in a morning. Wat Chedi Luang’s ruined 600-year-old stupa, Wat Phra Singh’s gilded Lanna viharn, Wat Chiang Man’s elephant chedi and the crumbling brick of Wat Umong Mahathera Chan.
Several of these temples run a monk chat: an hour set aside for visitors to sit with a novice and ask anything. Your guide will take you if you are interested, and skip it if you are not.

Before you book
- Temples are working religious sites: shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone. Our vehicles carry spare sarongs.
- Shoes come off inside ordination halls. Wear something you can slip on and off.
- Four to five kilometres on foot, mostly flat, with shade for about half of it.
- Women may not hand anything directly to a monk, or sit beside one. Your guide will explain the etiquette before you go in.
